Owning and operating a bakery has been my dream since I was in grade school. Though I worked in my family's restaurant for over a decade, my passion has always been baking. Not long after moving to Austin, I was fortunate enough to follow my dreams when Tim and I began to create what became Lux Bakery & Café, a small, independent endeavor that combined our cultural backgrounds with sweet American favorites.
Today we announce Lux Bakery & Café will close its doors. Running a successful, profitable restaurant is hard, even in the best of economic conditions. Our lease is nearing its end, and when factoring the high rent rates, increasing expenses, and sluggish Austin economy, it just isn't the best decision for us to continue.
The decision to close is, of course, bittersweet, since it means no longer seeing our staff and regular customers - friends, every one of them - who have supported us over the years. We took our motto "Baking Memories Every Day" to heart. We were honored to have been part of your lives and to have baked memories shared at baby showers, birthday parties, graduations, weddings, and all other imaginable occasions. Feel free to share your stories and photos with us .
To brush off the last five years at Lux as a mere footnote in our life journey would not do it justice. This has been an investment of more money, time, energy, tears, and love than we could ever have imagined and we kept at it as long as we could. As for Tim and I, we are going to take a break from baking for a while, go on that honeymoon we never had, and just see where the future takes us.
Lux Bakery and Cafe will operate on our usual schedule until one final celebration on Saturday, April 7, 2012, when we will hang up the aprons and turn off the ovens and bubble drink machines one last time. Save the date and help support Austin-owned neighborhood businesses by stopping in, picking up some fresh baked sweets, and allowing us a chance to wish you all the best… because we do.
